Main objective of the position:

  • Oversee all aspects of data management of multiple studies at RMPRU, including study documentation, timelines and personnel to ensure data integrity


  • VIDA Clinic – Chris Hani Baragwanath University Hospital – Soweto – Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

  • Receive forms or files from the clinic and compare them with an updated tracking log
  • Create SOPs
  • Checking forms for missing data and specific changes
  • Ensure double data entries are completed on time
  • Contribute to the Data Management section in protocols and grants
  • Assist in tracking research forms and patient/participant records
  • Implementation of data management plans
  • Maintain safe and secure storage of all electronic data and case report forms
  • Maintaining the confidentiality of research participants
  • Data backups and data maintenance as needed
  • Ensure that good clinical practice guidelines are followed
  • Liaise with study officers at sites regarding data queries and manage the flow of queries
  • Ensure that research data is entered correctly and in a timely manner
  • Ensure the data available for analysis is clean
  • Resolve discrepancies and queries with affected parties
  • Create both Access and online databases i.e. Redcap
  • Generate study randomizations
  • Manage and report queries on the Logic Pen system
  • Ensure that all documents are filed in a timely and systematic manner
  • Access and Redcap data cleaning and correction activities
  • Identifying and Resolving Database and Validation Errors
  • Participate in trial kick-off meetings and/or weekly study team meetings to discuss trial logistics
  • Compare data captured by data sensors and ensure data is clean and accurate
  • Handle all data issues and queries
  • Ensure that data collectors respond to their deliverables and save data as soon as possible
  • Oversee and manage data team tasks to ensure optimal utilization of staff
  • Perform and facilitate development and performance reviews
  • Identify sub-standard performance of team members and take necessary corrective action
  • Coach and train subordinates and team members to ensure acquisition of knowledge and skills required by the organization
  • Promote harmony, teamwork and information sharing
  • Staff management
  • Staff training and meetings
  • Participation in the follow-up of feedback meetings
  • Participation in meetings of study coordinators and investigators
  • Act in a professional and friendly manner in all dealings with internal stakeholders
  • Show a high level of customer orientation at all times

Minimum education and training required:

  • Bachelor/Diploma in Information Technology
  • Masters in Epidemiology, other relevant qualifications

Minimum professional experience required:

  • At least 3 years of experience in a clinical research environment, working with clinical trial data: experience with data quality and experience

Additional education, work experience and personal abilities desirable:

  • Certification in Good Clinical Practices
  • Experience in a healthcare environment
  • Knowledge of developing case report forms and understanding of the relationship between data collection, database design and data reporting to biostatistics
  • Meticulous with good attention to detail
  • Able to work within deadlines
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and work within a multidisciplinary team
