The Indian Railways Catering & Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) has dismissed media claims that it was selling consumers’ personal information. According to some media outlets, including social media advocacy groups, the company employs a consultant, and the company and the government plan to monetize passenger data.

A senior IRCTC official confirms that the company does not sell its data and has no intention of doing so, and that any media story to the contrary is completely false. The representative added that experts are employed to improve existing businesses. The expert will also provide recommendations for new business ventures that IRCTC and Indian Railways may wish to pursue in the near future.

The representative further pointed out that the organization is constantly seeking opportunities in new business areas as a business entity. The IRCTC has announced a tender to hire an internationally renowned consultant to carry out these tasks in a more professional manner and protect the financial interests of its investors.

According to reports, the stated aim of this action is to bring back up to 1,000 crore income for IRCTC. The consultant will be required to source all vendor related data from Indian Railways applications as well as passenger, freight and parcel activity statistics.

Further, he said that according to the RFP, customer information to be reviewed and used includes, among other things, “name, age, mobile phone number, gender, address, email ID, number of passengers, class of travel, payment method, username/password”, in addition to behavioral information such as payment and booking methods, travel frequency, etc. .

IRCTC has established a host of businesses on its own platform, including rail ticketing, retirement room booking, hotel booking, airline ticketing, bus booking, catering service, and more. In the same way, IRCTC will also create a new activity on its own platform. with the help or direction of industry leaders, and it will be defined by the higher authorities of the organization.

In addition to the official statement, IRCTC does not save any financial information about its customers on its system server since when a customer makes an online payment for one of its many services, control is transferred to the payment gateway. or the appropriate bank to process the Payment.

The idea behind it is to provide better assistance and guidance to IRCTC and Indian Railways to develop monetization strategies through data analytics. The consultant will guide the business on business monetization, new business in line with travel and the associated needs of its clients and advise on the value of monetizing existing digital assets, using anonymized data and observing various laws and laws including the Computer Act 2000 and its amendments, user data privacy laws including GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).

Over seven crore of the over 10 crore IRCTC users are active users. The company, a PSU under the Ministry of Railways, has been at the forefront of providing top-notch services to passengers on Indian Railways.
