Torbay Cemetery and Crematorium has appointed Stephen Ainsworth as its new site manager, marking his first role in the industry.

Ainsworth has a varied career path from bricklaying to developing and opening a tourist attraction and franchise car dealership and service station called The Mansell Collection, with the 1992 Formula 1 world champion Nigel Mansel.

After graduating as a bricklayer in the 1990s, he joined a family construction business before changing careers, which saw him work as an insurance agent and district inspector.

In 1999, he began a 23-year career in the automotive industry, and he rose through the ranks in the company, rising from sales manager to business manager.

Going forward, Ainsworth said he was determined to see the crematorium engage with the community and many local projects and charities.

Ainsworth said: “To be involved in such a personal moment in the lives of local families and supporting them throughout the day is hugely satisfying, something I have dreamed of throughout my working life.

“Family and friends were a little surprised when I first told them. However, when I explained my motivations, the caring and compassionate element of my role and the difference I can make to the local community , they understood my desire to join Westerleigh Group.

He added: “It is a privilege to be able to support local families, ensuring they can say goodbye to their loved ones in a personal and unique way.

“I have always enjoyed variety in what I do and look forward to taking that on in my current role, which will see me managing all aspects of our extensive site in Torbay, which includes a crematorium and various graveyards and graveyards. “
